a plan and lacking patience

Claudia should have known better. After all, her reluctance to tell Elizabeth about the pregnancy didn’t stem from nothing. Obviously, she knew it wouldn’t have been a long-term solution, and the truth would have come out eventually. From that perspective, her avoidance would have only been a postponed death—a delayed decay that would transpire regardless, but if she ignored that, she could fool herself into thinking they might have survived it.

Elizabeth’s first reaction had been wonderful, more than Claudia could have ever hoped for or would have been able to imagine. And she didn’t doubt Elizabeth, as in, she knew her words during that phone call had been genuine. But theory and reality at times clashed, and truly, Claudia should have expected this. Prepared for it.

She’d told no one else about the pregnancy, well, except Sammy, but she’d told her friend she didn’t want to talk about it yet. Sammy had replied with a pouting emoji, but respected Claudia’s wish. At least for now. Eventually, Sammy would have more questions, if only to make sure Claudia was OK. Her friend had a lot on her plate currently, and so Claudia hoped her call to finagle out the state of everything would take longer to arrive. Right now, she preferred not talking about this, especially since everything seemed to turn to cow manure.

First, Elizabeth had canceled their plans for Claudia to visit her and bribe Raji. Claudia had shrugged it off, given Elizabeth had promised a raincheck, but then she had been markedly absent at work. Tilda eventually informed her that Elizabeth was working from home. Three days later, she’d texted Elizabeth since she still hadn’t heard from her.

It wasn’t so much that Claudia expected them to communicate daily, but Elizabeth had been the one talking about routines being broken, and yet… The other day, when she’d witnessed two squirrels fight over a piece of ice cream cone next to a trashcan on her stroll through a nearby park, she’d sent Elizabeth a picture with the caption, “Raji would settle this fight fast.” Yet, nothing. No reply. Not on that day, and not since then.

Elizabeth usually replied right away, and she supposed it was possible that she’d seen it, gotten distracted, and then forgot, but together with the rest, unlikely. Later, when she’d been about to write Elizabeth and ask her if she was OK, she noticed that at some point, Elizabeth had reacted with a “ha ha” emoji to her message. With a sigh, Claudia had closed their thread and gone to work.

Her patrons distracted her somewhat from the conundrum of being pregnant by Elizabeth’s (ex)husband, though she questioned the value of said distraction, especially while dealing with a woman who micromanaged everything Claudia was doing.

“Are you sure this is the right form? What if the lawyer doesn’t agree with this? I read online that…” And on and on Millie went, much to Claudia’s utter consternation.

After lunch, which had been a nice break, but still not
